Warburg Professorship 2023
Christopher S. Wood, New York
The Aby Warburg Foundation and the Warburg-Haus are very pleased to announce that Christopher S. Wood, Professor at New York University, will be a guest at the Warburg-Haus in June as the Foundation’s Warburg Professor! He will live and work at the Warburg-Haus through mid-July. Christopher Wood will give his festive Warburg Professorship lecture in early July as part of the Warburg-Haus 2023 annual focus topic program, »Dynamics of Form.«
Christopher S. Wood is a professor in the Department of German, New York University. From 1992 until 2014 he taught in the Department of History of Art at Yale University. At Harvard University he was a Jacob Wendell Scholar and a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows. In 2002 he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and a NEH Rome Prize Fellowship to the American Academy in Rome. In fall 2004 he was Ellen Maria Gorrissen Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. In 2011-12 he was a Member of the School for Historical Studies of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; and a Senior Fellow at the Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften, Vienna.
He is the author of The Embedded Portrait: Giotto, Giottino, Angelico (forthcoming, Fall 2023), A History of Art History (2019), Anachronic Renaissance (2010) (with Alexander Nagel), Forgery, Replica, Fiction: Temporalities of German Renaissance Art (2008), and Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape (1993). Wood is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2018, he was a visiting professor at Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies. In 2023-24 he will be a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
