Over the last two decades, the study of the Christianisation of territory in Late Antiquity (4th–7th c.) has generated an extensive historiographical production that has substantially improved our understanding of religious change in rural settings. Despite these advances, the archaeological invisibility and uneven preservation of many rural churches and cult sites continue to pose major interpretative challenges, limiting our capacity to assess the real spatial, social and territorial impact of the construction of Christian landscapes in Late Antiquity. The growing availability of archaeological, textual and topographical data now provides an increasingly solid documentary basis for comparative and large-scale analyses. In this context, the use of spatial technologies—such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing techniques and network analysis—opens promising perspectives for revisiting long-standing questions from new methodological angles.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars in order to investigate, through the use of spatial technologies, the distribution of rural churches and cult places within late antique landscapes, and to examine the social, political, religious and territorial factors that shaped these patterns. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between ecclesiastical infrastructures, systems of mobility and strategies of territorial control, with the goal of assessing whether the organisation of Christian space resulted from coherent institutional planning or from more fragmented, locally driven initiatives.

Marshes: Myth/Method/Matter

Marshes: Myth/Method/Matter offers a cross-disciplinary exploration of the marsh through the lenses of art, culture, and the history of ideas. It traces literary, symbolic, and artistic encounters with the marsh within a phenomenological framework, approaching it in turn as mythological archetype, methodological paradigm, and artistic challenge.
Barbara Baert explores cosmological imagination and the sensory experience of wetlands, while attending to the artistic significance of raw and biological materials such as clay, mud, and fungi. In doing so, she reconsiders the contemporary challenges facing Bildwissenschaft in the context of the Geological and Ecological Turn.
The lecture is based on the book Back to the Marshes. Myth, Method, Matter. A Memoir Almost (De Gruyter, 2026), written during Baert’s residency at the Warburg-Haus as the 2023 Aby Warburg Professor.

Barbara Baert is Professor of Medieval Art, Iconology and Historiography at KU Leuven. Her work brings together questions and insights from the history of ideas, cultural anthropology, and philosophy, with a particular sensitivity to cultural archetypes and their manifestations in the visual arts. Baert is the recipient of several international fellowships and awards, including the prestigious Belgian Francqui Prize for Human Sciences in 2016.
Her recent book, Back to the Marshes. Myth, Method, Matter. A Memoir Almost (2026), is the final volume of a tripartite study with De Gruyter on the cultural impact of weather and environment, the artistic manifestations of fertility and anxiety, and the study of matter and medium. The series includes About Sieves and Sieving (2019) and Looking into the Rain (2022).

Sharon Macdonald ist Sozialanthropologin und arbeitet sowohl in und zwischen verschiedenen Disziplinen als auch über deren Grenzen hinweg – mit Künstler:innen, Museen und anderen Akteuren. Nach ihrem Studium an der Universität Oxford hatte sie mehrere Professuren im Vereinigten Königreich inne, bevor sie 2015 als Alexander-von-Humboldt-Professorin an die Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin kam. International bekannt für ihre breit gefächerte Forschung – insbesondere zu Politik und Praxis von Kulturerbe, Erinnerung und Museen – sind ihre Arbeiten in mehr als zehn Sprachen erschienen. Professorin am Institut für Europäische Ethnologie ist sie zudem Direktorin des Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik und Gründungs-Co-Direktorin des Käte-Hamburger-Kollegs | Centre for Advanced Study inherit. heritage in transformation, beide ebenfalls an der Humboldt-Universität. Daneben war sie jüngst Gastprofessorin an der Tsinghua-Universität in Peking, ist Honorarprofessorin für Sozialanthropologie an der University of Aberdeen, Reseach Associate am Pitt Rivers Museum der University of Oxford und Mitglied verschiedener Gremien, unter anderem im wissenschaftlichen Beirat des Hauses der Europäischen Geschichte, dessen stellvertretende Vorsitzende sie ist. Sie ist Fellow der Royal Society of History, Fellow des Royal Anthropological Institute und Mitglied der Academia Europaea.

Michael Cole ist Träger der Martin Warnke-Medaille und des Wissenschaftspreises der Aby-Warburg-Stiftung 2026.
Zur Erinnerung an Martin Warnke finden die Verleihung und der Festvortrag an seinem siebten Todestag statt.
Die Senatorin der Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung, Maryam Blumenthal, wird in ihrer Funktion als Vorsitzende der Aby-Warburg-Stiftung das Grußwort sprechen.
Michael Cole ist Howard McP. Davis-Professor für Kunstgeschichte und Archäologie an der Columbia University. Zuvor lehrte er an der University of North Carolina, an der University of Pennsylvania und am Williams College. Er war Fellow und Gastwissenschaftler an der American Academy in Rom, an der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, in der Villa I Tatti in Florenz, an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München und am Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
Zu Coles Büchern gehören Cellini and the Principles of Sculpture (2002), Ambitious Form (2011), Leonardo, Michelangelo, and the Art of the Figure (2015) und Sofonisba’s Lesson (2019, erweiterte und überarbeitete Auflage 2026). Das gemeinsam mit Stephen Campbell verfasste Werk The New History of Italian Renaissance Art (2011, überarbeitete Auflage 2018) wurde ins Italienische, Japanische und Chinesische übersetzt; darüber hinaus hat er acht weitere Bücher herausgegeben oder mitverfasst, zuletzt Spanish Italy & The Spanish Americas: Connected Art Histories (zusammen mit Alessandra Russo, 2026). Sein Aufsatz »Cellini’s Bood« aus dem Jahr 1999 wurde mit dem Arthur Kingsley Porter-Preis der College Art Association ausgezeichnet, und der gemeinsam mit Diletta Gamberini verfasste Aufsatz »Vincenzo Danti’s Deceits« aus dem Jahr 2016 erhielt den William Nelson-Preis der Renaissance Society of America. Die von ihm gemeinsam mit Oliver Tostmann kuratierte Ausstellung mit Zeichnungen von Bildhauern der Renaissance wurde vom Boston Globe zur »besten Ausstellung alter Meister des Jahres 2014« gekürt. Derzeit arbeitet er an einem Buch über visuelle Askese im vormodernen Europa; ein Ausblick auf dieses Projekt erschien unter dem Titel »Stripped-Down Painting« in der Dezemberausgabe 2024 von Grey Room.
